Located in the historic center of Naples, The Pio Monte della Misericordia has its roots in the early 17th century. A charity brotherhood, “Pious Mount of Mercy”, composed of seven young nobles was founded in 1601. The men would meet every Friday at the Hospital for Incurables and minister to the sick. In 1602 they established their church, and just three years later they received an apostolic letter from Pope Paul V, giving them special privileges to the high altar. The church is famous for its art works, including Caravaggio’s The Seven Works of Mercy.
