Sultan Ahmed Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque due to its blue-tiled interior, is the most important mosque in Istanbul. It was built by the Ottoman Sultan Ahmed I between 1609-1616 and was designed to compete with the majesty of Hagia Sophia. It is located next to the Byzantine Hippodrome in the old city center.
